Default 1992 Corvette Manual Shifting

Hi everyone

As I’m learning more about my Corvette I have an observation that I would like to check with fellow manual owners.

I’ve seen the video of the chap in the yellow corvette changing gears by ripping the clutch and gear stick…..think it’s the original owners video.

I’ve noticed on my Vette when I am driving normally I am able to change through the gears relatively smoothly and with little effort.

However, if I am driving spiritedly, I’ve noticed that I have to be quite aggressive with the gear stick to shift from 1st to 2nd and second to 3rd. Sometimes it feels as if clutch is not properly engaged when I pull it from 1st to 2nd know my foot is hard on the floor with the clutch. Is this normal behaviour on the C4 or do I have an issue coming up with the clutch and gearbox or some sort of adjustment? The clutch master and slave are both new.

You are good. When you shift slowly, everything feels smoother. When you are more aggressive, everything is happening way faster so it "feels" jerky although it really is not.

I've watched the video too and in my opinion the video driver is over exaggerating the shifting. I jump on my ZR1 all the time and it is still real smooth although everything is faster.

Your clutch really does not care.

For me, shifting gets smoother as trans warms up and oil thins, along with higher rev shifts. Are you doing this with everything good and hot? What oil is in the ZF and when was it last changed?

Also, when cold and doing lazy driving/shifts I find double clutching makes it very smooth.

Yeah...I'm only stomping on it once everything is nice and warm. It was just a strange sensation.

Gearbox oil is next up on my list of things to change out....wouldn't be surprised if it's still all original in there.

My suspicion is that perhaps a "performance" clutch has been fitted, and that's why I'm not familiar with it. I know for sure the dual mass has been replaced with a single mass flywheel.
So, pulling off on inclines is a bit tricky....it shudders. It prefers to have the clutch released very quickly. You can't ride it.
