The drain plug idea looks great. did he say he got the plug at Harbor Freight, or an auto parts store?
I think I am going to try to do it when i drop the OD pan as my next adventure.
I got the fluid, just waiting on the pan gasket to arrive.
also, should I use RTV on both sides, the pan to gasket, and the gasket to trans? and which RTV is best?
thanks for all the help I appreciate it.
I just put RTV on the top of the gasket where it meets the pan. After putting it on, tightening, and filling, I didn't use the trans and let it sit overnight. Doesn't leak at all.
If I had to select a current lube for the 4-speed in my 85 I'd probably use the GM Syncromesh Fluid. It has been fabulous in my 90 so I put it in the 92 as well. It is certainly "approved" for yellow metals.
I don't know that the use of what you mention to be a 'desired' use! All bearings in the T10 and other (similar) are 'ball' with the exception of the counter-shaft and the ZF is Metric 'needle roller'. Caged ball and tapered cone/race I believe have different requirements. 'Yellow Metals' have nothing to do with it. I do understand your mention of 'Yellow Metals'! I believe currently many use and suggest GL4 85W90 and NEVER 85W90 that has the additive for 'differential clutch-packs'. Newer GL5 so long as it's MT1 approved is mentioned often also. All lubricants have certainly changed through the years.
