Default ecm upgrades

i have an 85 vette. i am currently in the process of a complete rebuild( engine , trans. etc) i also want to upgrade the ecm to the newer 165. i dont
really have a question right now, more like wanting opinions.. if you were upgrading, what would you go with?? newer oem or aftermarket? thanks

There are 3 options.

1) The 165 like you mentioned.

2) The 730.

3) Sy/Ty ECM if you are going to need to be able to use a 2 or 3 BAR MAP sensor for turbocharging.

1-You only need to get an ECM, 2 relays (repalce the burnoff module).CORKVETTE is still using MAF I believe and is pushing 375 RWHP.

2-You need the ECM, and extra ECM connector, and a MAP sensor. MAP sensors are about $35. Bowtye8 went this route and is running with a MiniRam and some killer times last time I heard.

3-If you need to have boost control and a table that can actually use increased tables available with 2 or 3 BAR, the Sy/Ty is about your only choice.

Pros and cons of the 730 is that if your MAF fails, you have to buy another one at a high cost, whereas a MAP sensor rarely fails and runs only $35. If you burn chips and want instant gratification, MAP is usually easier for the beginner. A good archive on the 730 can be found if you search for "730 club"

ok, maybe i need to be a little more specific here.. im building the engine w/ long rods, & vortech heads. im going to keep compression down to 9:1 and install a d-1 procharger kit. im planning on using the race kit , getting my own intercooler & using an adjustable racing wastegate to control the boost( mounted to the intake pipe after the intercooler). would the 730 be the best choice in this configuration?if so , where can i get my hands on some wiring schematics to do this? i searched for "730 club, but came up empty.

A buddy of mine has an LT1, 94 with a ProCharger. It is the worst designed setup in the world when it comes to locating the MAF sensor. Who the heck knows how it got put into production like it did. Maybe a different brand would be easier and routes things differently from the start. Who knows.

IMO, the 730 is easy to get started with. It's not going to be instant gratification, but it's about the closest you'll get. The conversion to speed density (SD) will take no longer than a well-planned out weekend. You don't have to worry about ducting for the MAF sensor, whether or not it is in front of or behind a BOV, where air gets purged to (in front of or to atmosphere, etc), and the such.
