My L 98 is frying a couple of plug wires. I installed MSD super wires and after 3-4 hundred miles the number 5 plug wire is almost ashes. No exhaust leaks that I can tell that would deflect the exhaust to the plug boot but something isn’t right. This is the second time this has happened. What would cause this?
Only 1 wire.?
A possibility poor conductor contact at crimped on terminals.
Wire # 5 touched the exhaust. Developed an arch out spike. This typically takes a fairly long time.
This condition would destroy the wire. You would have noticed a mis-fire. Lack of power. Way before the pics discovered condition.
Current condition indicates direct short.
Pull the plug inspect the insolator.
Maybe try putting some kind of heat tolerant wrap on that wire? Also, you might could try some high temp black plastic tubing. It's like the black tubing you find from Autozone, except it has a gray stripe running down it. I had to buy some when I redid the plug wires on my 89. There's a place in Florida selling some with cheap shipping.
Metal heat shields are missing. A trip to pick n pull, Buick V6s are prime source for shields that slip over boots. Moroso makes high.temp sleeves for wires.
Thanks for the reply’s. I will check the exhaust tomorrow for a leak. I drove it a car show yesterday over 120 miles there and back without a problem. I did notice when I let off the throttle getting off the highway it made a backfire sound like my old Harley. Don’t remember it doing that before. Will also look for a heat shield and tape. These are MSD super conductor plug wires so they were not cheap.
Do you have the heat shield on the 1 and 3 plugs. Since its only the one wire id guess its a bad exhaust gasket. It may only be noticeable under load, for now..
