Depends on how you drive it. If it is stock and you drive it as such, then I would suggest you just have yours rebuilt. Birmingham is 200,000 so I would think there are several rebuild shops in the city, both chain and independent. Check around and ask any local car clubs for recommendations and read any available reviews. Make it clear you want yours rebuilt and not a shelf transmission.(take down the tag number) A mail order piece often results in trouble. If there is a problem, you can't just go to the local shop and have it corrected. The supplier will blame the installer and the installer will blame the builder and you are in the middle, usually holding the bag of coins.

If you have the skills to pull the trans, you could rebuild it yourself. I have rebuilt the 4l60e in my daughter's Tahoe and a couple of others. You need to get a bracket to hold the transmission using an engine stand or one that secures to your work bench. You need a tool to compress the clutch pack spring to disassemble it. You need a bunch of picks, snap ring pliers and a shop press. There's tons of YouTube videos on all the steps. As far as the difference in builds you'll see how full of crap shops are in charging 2k for a basic rebuild or 5-8k for a performance build. The factory uses 6 clutches in the 1st-2nd pack. A performance build uses 8-9 clutches. It takes 2 minutes to put in more clutches. It's 50-100 more for the kit with the better clutches. You replace all the seals in the valve body with a rebuild and those come in the deluxe kits. To add a shift kit you buy for 20 a stronger plunger and spring for 1 or 2 of the valves. So for the same labor and an extra 100 in parts you have a $5000+ build. When I rebuilt mine I replaced every bushing, seal, pump, clutch, etc. I know if you have a shop do it they'll most likely replace the burned clutch and put it back together without replacing everything else. Anyways, I'd look up a couple of YouTube videos and see if it is something you would feel comfortable doing. It wasn't that hard at all.

I 2nd on doing it yourself. I was in same boat. Not knowing how or doubting my abilities. I did my 4l60e on my 94. It was not hard at all. I spent hours researching. The best advice I can offer is to watch video Transmission Bench 4L60e. Buy there kit. I tried to save money and shop around. For the time I spent searching i wish i had just purchased kit from Transmission Bench. I have 1400 dollars into my rebuild. I have a few upgrades, a couple new tools now and my time. I know whats in it is the nice thing. Any questions just ask.
