Default Exhaust drone woes

I know this subject has been beaten to death but I’ve dealt with it long enough and want to preserve what’s left of my hearing. I replaced the rotted out stinger tips and factory y pipe with fresh 2.5” stainless going to a pair of black widow neighborhaters and 3.5” dual tips. The car sounds great but has the worst drone I’ve ever experienced, even worse than the loud V6 trucks I’ve owned before. Is there any way to reduce the drone but keep the awesome exhaust note? How well does a crossover pipe work? Should I try different tips? Thanks for any input!

You could insert some motorcycle baffles in your exhaust tips. Only need to drill one hole to attach them in each exhaust tip. Have used them several times and they do work. You won't see them unless you really look closely. About $15 each. Worth a try.

I can try it but I also want to keep
the volume it has, specially during wot. I keep seeing that single exhaust tips really helps kill drone, how well does that work?

Not a bad idea. Just like "supertrapp" exhaust. Had my TA dialed approx 14 defusers /per muffler. Tested on my 383 not bad.

Problem is.
Less defusers. Equals very restricted.

More defusers. Equals UN restricted.
Can be expensive. Adding onto a muffler is already a baffle / defuser.

If you've noticed and read the tons of drone threads over the years, you should know an H/X pipe won't solve the problem. You should also know a Heimholtz resonator is your best shot to attenuate problematic frequencies WITHOUT doing it to all of them. There is at least one good video on building them on YouTube.

Or....You could figure out a way to reinstall a normal, legal, catalized/muffled exhaust -- and add cutouts for the OCCASIONAL times you feel like hating on your neighbors.

Crossover pipes would only alleviate it, it won't eliminate it. Thats why people go to Corsa or add resonators.

That's. Interesting. From my observation. 60% of the corsa installed. in C4s. Complained about typical drone.
Like many cars with a large open hatch.
The pocket/ glass combo. acts like a ampitheater.

I've had great luck with drone reduction using an H pipe, but it needs to be installed as far forward as possible to maximize the efficiency. Previous crossovers I've installed behind the transmission or near the rear differential have been a waste of my time and effort.

FWIW.
I have modified OBX complete S.S. system 3" headers. 3" pipe 16" after, H-pipe very close to front, pipes/ mufflers. Zero drone. Was in my 383, now stock engine, going back to the 383
fantastic tone exhaust.

Which resonators do people use to get rid of drone? I looked around and there’s so many different ones out there that it’s hard to choose the right one.

You can goto a random exhaust shop with at least 7 to 10 lifts and 3 to 5 employees welding on random vehicles.
Look on the wall they have generic all size resonators and mufflers.

choose a 3" resonator and 3" muffler any random largest size that will fit.
It will sound like stock and all the annoying noises are gone. Make sure you can see through the resonator like a big open hole, its not a cat it should not have anything blocking the tube.

I did this for my current 600rwhp turbo 5.3L easy fast done silence

Generic stuff. Walker brand muffler I think. I used a cutout wireless remote so the turbo can spool faster and make some noise when I feel like it. But most of the time just drive it like a normal car, nice and quiet. Saves you a headache.

I just installed the Magnaflow X pipe resonator on my 93 (headers cat delete, back through stock exhaust). Didn't really have a lot of drone to start with, but any I had sure is gone now. Just be aware, I like a suttle exhaust not (hence back through the stock mufflers), the Magnaflow really quited the car down to virtually a stock sound. So it may be more than your looking for.
