Default Vehicle Speed Sensor wire location

I recently installed a Tremec TKX into my 1986 Convertible. It was originally a 4+3 car and is otherwise stock. To make the stock speedometer work, I have a Dakota Digital signal interface unit that is wired into the VSS wires where they plug into the ECM. Right now the speedo reads way too fast. My factory service manual tells me that the VSS wire is brown and located at A10 on the smaller of the two ECM plugs. That is not the correct wire because the speedo still works (way fast) with that wire disconnected. I can only assume that the FSM that I have is incorrect. Can someone help me find the correct VSS wire?

The signal path for VSS is sensor to dash cluster and then the dash generates an output signal to the ECM. Wiring it in at the ECM only corrects what the ECM sees, not what is displayed on the dashboard.

How did it work out? I have converted an auto to a zf6. I was thinking I just need to leave the vss wires alone and it will read mph on the dash?
