Finally found my trans. leak. It was the grommet around the dip stick. Now I need to get the dip stick out but can't find an easy way to get the bolt out of the bellhousing. Surely I don't have to drop the c-beam and tilt the trans to get to it do I? Man, I thought this was going to be an easy fix. Anybody got any advise?????
My rig was (2) 3/8 5" ext + (2) 3/8 3" ext + 3/8 swivel + 14mm stubby socket attached to a 1/2" wratchet with 1/2 - 3/8 converter thingy. I did the work from the bottom.
The best extensions I found to tackle this is the 'wobble' extensions, that allow about 5-7 degree of angle, vs using one ot the universal joint type setups...
I think a good tranny shop could do it quick for you. I get to mine with about a 2' long extension and a wobbly 9/16" socket on the end. The left upper bell housing bolt is even harder to get than the right. Good Luck.
I will tell you how to fix the leak without pulling the bolt out.
Go to your local autoparts store and get some of the gasket sealer called the "The Right Stuff" basically an RTV on steroids :D
Get some break cleaner and clean off the leaking fluid real good and let dry. Then put some of this stuff on your finder and smear it around where the dipstick goes into the tranny. Goop it on there, and wait about 2 hrs. I will bet it never leaks again. The stuff is unreal and will set up like a rubber. If you need to get it off in the future, it will peel off with some work.
Just a thought if the bolt is unreachable. I know what bolt you are talking about and I always have the C-beam off.
I had the same problem after a rebuild... And there was no way to even get my hand in there let alone a wrench in there and turning out the retainer. I ended up taking the carpet out of the passenger side and cutting a small hole in the floor pan. correcting the problem. And then re-fiber glassing the area...
This seemed to be the cave man way... but I thought that it would be better than dropping the tranny...
Hope this helps
after re-reading, your problem was a bit different. I had miss installed the seal where the dip stick enters the top pass. side of the tranny.
I'm still a rookie so that was the easiest way for me to do it. I'm sure there's probably an easier way. :smash:
That is the easiest way. I don't think there is an easier way:(. Get the 14mm u-joint socket for this job. Jack the front of the car up real high so you have enough room to play under the car.
I have the same leak and wondering where to buy that gromer/O-ring/gasket at? would regular parts store like Pepboy, Autozone have it?

I went to the local store and it wasn't even on their computer. I got mine at the Chevy dealer since I was there getting parts anyway, got the last one. I usually get there right after the last one walks out the door. If yours doesn't have one, try a local tranmission shop; that was going to be my next stop.
Well guys thanks for all the help, I guess I'll either take it to the shop down the street or just use "The Right Stuff" sealer until the next time I have the c-beam out.
When I got my new tranny I messed up (broke) the new seal for the TV cable. As a fix, I did some quick thinking and realized a garden hose seal is about the same size. Come to find it was the PERFECT size  Still haven't had a leak. :yesnod:
