The last time I had a scan tool hooked up to my car it was making the fan go on and off over and over. You can hear the relay clicking. It was not reading either. :banghead:
What tool where you using. When I put my 87 into diagnostic mode with Diacom+ to get the troublecodes the fan stays on constant. It is the same as jumping the two pins on the ALDL port. If I put Diacom+ into the ALDL communication mode the fans stay off and it just scans the data.
Thanks for the reply! It was an AutoXray. It worked fine for the first few uses, then it just started acting up. I can't think of a single thing I did to make it act like this. I wasn't paying attention to the fan at first so I honestly don't remember the fan coming on with the first few uses. Maybe the reason for the fan problem is I didn't have it properly connected to the ALDL.
If the fan is coming on and off over and over it sounds like the scan tool isn't holding the ground sufficiently on the ALDL pins. I'm guessing here, but it sounds like it. When my car is in Diag. mode the fan stays on 100%.
I woulnd't have been able to get my car through the snow to get in the shop. I was thinking of doing it outside in the car but it's just too doggone cold out. :bb
"Depending on what '165 bin file you use, be sure to check that it's programmed for the correct A/C pressure switch in your application, either normally-open (N/O) or normally-closed (N/C). An incorrect setting will cause the Rad. Fan to run continuously."
I just wandered into this section today, so I know mostly nothing, but I've been doing lots of reading! Hopefully my bit of Motorola chip programming experience will give me a head start. Very interesting stuff. I'll get back to my reading and see if this '85 ECM is worth messing with.
That link you found was  thanks! I want to do that with the 87 but scan pages of the component locations instead. I haven't worked on the car since before the 10th. We've been locked into a nasty cold spell and the forecast is for more of the same this week. It hasn't been warm enough to melt the sheet of ice on the door sill. I'm probably going to be putting the car in storage w/in the next few days and worry about all this in a couple of months. :(
