The large waterpump pulley looks out in front of everything, what drives it?
Hard to tell in photo, but the water pump has a large metal 'Frisbee' attached to it from the factory that most people remove. The belt is a serpentine style and is driven along with rest of the accessories.
Different years. I found out its a damper like on the crank used on 89 and newer water pump. Bottom pic looks like an older engine since it does not have the top valve cover bolts. Probably should not remove it if Gm spent money to put it on.
You'll get many different opinions on this, but my understanding was that back in the day GM added the frisbee damper on the water pump pulley to solve a problem where some cars would throw the belt. I don't know if all cars were susceptible to it, but manual gearbox cars went on-hold from orders being fulfilled until this and other issues were solved. In some conditions, under high-rpm / AC compressor engagement shock to the belt / gearshifts changing RPM to the engine, the frisbee was designed to smooth out some of those belt shocks. Most people on here report no problem removing the frisbee and keeping it off though, so your mileage may vary.
