i am going to put 1.6rr's on my 92 and was wondering if they require new springs. i was looking at other posts and noticed that some of the people had not even put springs in when changing to a hot cam. in my opinion i would always get matched springs for any new cam. does any one run 1.6 ratio rockers with stock springs with any luck. i noticed on summit's web site they recomend a spring change but suggest their brand springs. they just trying to make money or is this a true statement? also, will comp cams pro mag roller rockers fit under the stock valve covers. i noticed that crane had listed a 1.6 gold rocker just for the centerbolt valve covers?
The Crane rocker that they list for the centerbolts are their Gold Race rockers...these are the stock LT4 pieces. If you decide to change springs and your motor is otherwise fairly stock (in otherwords running roughly stock rpm range, etc, etc)...I think you aluded to using the HotCam so I assume you have that....then the stock LT4 springs would be fine.
I suggest stock replacements for the 1.6s. When i put LT4 springs on my lt1 i noticed a drop in top end power. theyre too strong. i know LT1 are $85, i think LT4s are #105 or #115.. If you want to be on the safe side i say go with comps or crane springs that are #90.

There is no way LT4 valve springs are too strong and taking away high end power. LT1 springs are within 0.020" of crush when you use 1.6 rockers on the stock LT1 cam. You're making a big mistake keeping stock springs with 1.6 rockers, loss of power due to valve float is the best case, worst case you drop a valve and need a new motor.
i contacted gm performance parts and asked the tech dept. if it was recommended that you change to lt4 springs when using 1.6 rockers and he said that the stock lt1 springs are fine and that is what they recommend. :flag

You call a toll free number and take the advise of a phone jockey you know nothing about...good luck. Have you actully measure the crush threshold of a stock LT1 spring? I have, you'll have much less than 0.020" clearence before crush with a stock LT1 cam and 1.6 rockers (most are closer to 0.010"). Combine that with the weak LT1 spring rate and some street miles on the stock springs and you have a real formula for valve float. I hope you don't float a valve and crack a retainer when you're running hard at the strip. Dropping a valve because you saved $30 is gonna seem kinda silly, but hey, it's your Vette. Maybe you secretly lust for a 383 :)
