I have a 1994 corvette with 81,000 miles and today it developed what kind of sounded like an exhaust leak except that it occured when I let off the gas rather than when I was on the gas. After jacking the car up with my dad and brother we listened to each part of the exhaust system with a stethascope and found that the sound was loudest at the front of the center muffler. Hence we think the center muffler is bad. We took out the exhaust system from the cats back and banged on the center muffler with a rubber hammer, but could not get it to make any sounds. So we then started the car with just the cats on it and according to my brother and father, it sounded fine. Thus we think the center muffler is the culprit, but are not really sure. Any ideas? Also, if it is the center muffler, I can not find an auto parts store that sells a replacement. So any advice on how to deal with that (put on an aftermarket muffler, weld in two glass packs, weld in regular pipe, etc.) would be appreciated. I wouldn't mind making the exhaust a little beefier ;) , but I need to keep it legal because I live in a metro area.

That center piece on my 94LT1 is called a resonator. I removed it and installed two pipes to make true dual exhaust. I left stock mufflers on, I think you will like the sound. If you get it done at a muffler shop expect to pay at least $30.00.

 

Yes, that's right, it is the resonator, not the "muffler." Sorry. :withstupid:

However, I am still wondering if forum members agree that the resonator is the problem.
