I´m thinking about replacing the mufflers with straight pipes (from the y_pipe and back), mainly to get a more throaty sound. I would like to see some pic´s of this setup, and hear some opinions from you about this. I´ve tried to dismount my mufflers, they are really tight. Do you think applying some heat will do the trick? My mufflers are in a very good condition, so I don´t want to spoil them.
Thanks in advance
start by cutting off the pipe ahead of the mufflers with a sawzall (I'm salivating already). That way you will have the pipes on a bench to work on. You can try heat, but remember that both pieces of metal will expand. What I would do is take a dremel w/ cutting wheel and place it 90 degrees to your first cut at the overlap of the muffler fitting to the straight section. EVER-SO-GENTLY make a small vertical slit on the top and bottom and carefully bend the metal off and voila you have an undamaged muffler
Yeah, I did it with the Mid-Am kit. Had it installed at a muffler shop for $50.
Definite throaty sound, less backpressure and NO RESONANCE. The standard cats provide enough muffling. And it really cleans up the back part that every driver sees behind you.
BTW, no need to save the resonators (not really mufflers) unless you want to sell them. You'll never want to go back.
I sure like what you said about resonance. That´s been a major topic in a discussion with my friend (he´s got an -89 Conv.). His opinion is that you will get resonance if you´re not using an y-pipe with a crossover. Btw, do you have a picture of your setup?

Yeah, I do but this forum is too complicated for a PC-stupid guy like me to use. I had to have Brandt post my sig for me on his site as mine had a "&" in the URL and didn't work. My site you just click on the "attachment" banner and you can post pics right from your hard drive. No URL needed. I can't figure this site out. Sorry about that. But it looks SOOOOO much better now from the back and sounds good too.
On a side note, it's louder at first then quiets down some as the cats warm up. Don't know why. Notice how far my tips extend beyond the bumper. I don't know if that is any reason why I have no resonation. Just the muffler shop installer's idea of what he thought looked best. Maybe I got lucky. BTW, no cross-over necessary.
