I'm getting close to tearing into a bunch of maintenance items and other tweaks to my 93 6 speed with 47k miles. I want to replace some hoses, serpentine/pulleys, the water pump/thermostat, shaft seals (nothing leaking I am aware of), reseal the intake etc... As for ignition I want to replace the cap/rotor, wires and plugs. I have no running issues and I expect the opti is original (or hopefully OEM) along with the rest of the ignition system. With this I want to retrofit for vacuum to the current opti if it all looks good/bearing is good when I pull it.
I have "read" on the forum that you can use an MSD cap/rotor to do the retrofit, but I reached out to petris to see about options and if I could just get a whole kit from them (cap/rotor plus proper vacuum setup with restictors/filters). Chris responded that the MSD cap/rotor cannot be installed on an OEM distributer base as the design is proprietary? Is this true or is there a "special" MSD cap/rotor that is OEM style for this purpose? Regardless, the petris retro cap/vacuum harness option looks pretty decent...although a bit pricey.
Any advice from those have done a retrofit or just advice as to what to watch out for with seals etc...? Also open to "while your in there" suggestions...
Sorry for the bad pics below. That is a MSD cap (and rotor) on an OEM, I repeat OEM pin drive Optispark that I bought a while ago from the Optidoctor (Brad) to keep as a spare. I know you have a spline drive Optispark, however here on the forum there are discussions about converting to and using the later model caps. Here is link to one such and in that discussion is a link to a website that is gone. I retrieved it for you from the wayback machine, but the pictures weren't saved. You can see the text and read it though.
This is the best most cost effective solution so far ! If the Petris cap is as good as his units are and equivalent in quality to MSD components, everyone should do these (earlier units of course).
MSD caps and rotors are the best. Brad (the Optidoctor) found that out through his testing and that is why he used those.
Yep that is what I am going to go with. I want to dig in first just to be sure the bearing/opti itself is in good condition before I order. And of course no way I am throwing away a working mitsu sensor. I will still need a new rotor but I am assuming I can get that locally…
Everybody replace the engine seals for both the water pump and opti when they do this?
there is a company that totally eliminates the opti spark all together, ill try to find out the company name and report back.OK I FOUND IT !! TORQUEHEAD LTD WWW.TORQUEHEAD.COM
