My R4 compressor is leaking from the large outer shell o-rings, as they often do.
I have come across a newer version of the R4 compressor which eliminates this leak point and houses a scroll type compressor within the R4 form factor, rather than the original piston internals.
I understand it probably has less capacity than the original R4, and I can see the manufacturer is using a smaller pulley to compensate for this.
I guess it would have to be smoother running and quieter also.
Are there any early C4 guys here who have installed one?
Thanks, yeah I had read that thread but there's not much more info out there. I was hoping someone had run one in a C4.
I just hit the button on Rockauto, so I'll report back once I've installed it

I am interested in this as well. Please post a part number from rockauto or where ever you found it.
There's a few different part numbers depending on you application as some have different pulleys etc. Also has different numbers if it comes pre-oiled etc.
Just go to Rockauto and find the HVAC section for your vehicle and it should be there called 'UAC Scroll Compressor"
Just realized I didn't come back and update this thread!
I installed the scroll compressor back around March and it works really well. It's dead quiet, doesn't load up the motor or induce any vibrations at all like the old R4 did and it makes nice cold air.
The AC in my 'ol 84 has never been better. Nine or 10 months on, it hasn't leaked the gas out, probably a new record for my 20+ years of ownership with this car.
I imagine it's universal for any car with an R4 compressor.
The '84's mounting bracket actually needed a small mod as the shape of the rear of the scroll compressor was a little different to the OE type, but it was all sorted in 5mins with a file.
