I'm getting ready to put a ZF in my 88. I'm wondering who makes the best one for it? What are some of you guys using and how do you like it? Pro and Cons please.
the Ripper isin't great at all times. It is notchy, and does require a little more effort until you get used to it. It's one of those shifters that if you aren't in good driving spirits, tired, drunk, uncoordinated, or aren't a good driver, etc... you won't shift very well. I see it as a good way to determine whether or not I'm sober enough to drive.
On the other hand, you will NOT find a better shifter for street, drag, or autocross racing. When you are pulling WOT to redline and you rip a flawlessly smooth, short, and precise upshift, you will be in heaven.
I bought a Hurst from a forum member, and he gave me a great deal on it , and I have seen him put several others on here. Don't quote me on this but I think it was 125. Oh yeah, I like my Hurst a lot more than I like my buddies ripper.
Had a hurst. No offence but i threw it out and bought a Ripper. Waaaaaay Better, for me that is. Its always going to depend on what you like. Ripper is shorter, notchier (race car shifts), and looks 1 million times better. Every time i drive my car i feel like in a race car :)
Hurst for me. I put alot of miles on the car. The ripper is hard enough to make daily driving less fun to me. The Hurst is firm but not overly so. The hurst is also half the price. Last, the pattern for the Hurst is pretty much a square box. The stock pattern is a rectangle that is long front to back. The pattern for the ripper is a rectangle that's long side to side, meaning there is more lateral motion than front to back motion in the shift pattern. Doesn't feel balanced to me. I'd get a ripper if I was dragging the car but for the street to me the Hurst is the king. To each his own. :steering:
may my hurst RIP somewhere at the bottom of the toronto garbage dump. if i wanted it to shift like my friends nissan, i wudve kept it
:iagree: I now have the Hurst in mine. It is noticeably stiffer shifting than with the stock unit but not at all hard to live with for normal driving. It has enough improvement to handle any driving needs that I have. I have not tried the ripper but I personally would hesitate to make the shifting any stiffer unless you're only interested in racing. I vote for the Hurst. Just another opinion. :)
