Well after 13 years my c4 has an engine harness thanks to one of our members here. So the harness is in the passenger side firewall hole but its getting hung up at the oil sending unit and wiper motor. The harness to the
trans is down there ok. I think the harness needs to go lower so maybe i need to remove the wiper motor. The fsm shows a sketch of the routing but thats not reality. Any thoughts.
Great pics, thanks. Its so tight in that area. I think I need to remove the wiper motor and drop the harness way down. It looks like your injector harness is coming up from that
area below the wiper motor. Its such a pain working in such a tight spot.
In one of your pictures it shows the brake booster vacuum line with other lines underneath it. I think those a re spark plug wires but the injector harness is going over them. Just odd looking.

Wiper motor install needs to be last or at least after the engine is wired.
It looks like it comes up to just below the distributor and Y's off toward the clamp between the distributor and wiper motor and comes up beside the wiper motor, the other side comes out near the heat exch.
.
Ok today sucked because my "new" 40 year old harness broke at a splice that someone twisted and taped. I had to solder it back together again. But now that I am pushing
down on the harness with the wiper motor removed, I see 2 grounds and one harness bracket. I am hoping that this connects to the bolt on the exterior of the drivers side head.
There is only one threaded area there. If it connects to the bellhousing I am screwed because there is zero clearance.
Grounds are grounds as long as they connect back to the negative side of the battery or something else that connects to the negative side of the battery. I would insure the frame ground behind the battery is good and the braided line to the engine is well grounded, then you can ground those wires anywhere, they do not have to be in any specific place as long as they connect to something (frame, engine, etc) that connects back to the battery.
Don't worry about grounds except how clean they are and getting bare metal to metal contact. The only other thing to worry about is how healthy the braided ground straps are to the frame and engine. It may be easier to get to the engine ground from underneath.
some grounds do go to the studded bolt top driverside of the bellhousing. 14mm nut/stud bolt. its possible that bundle of grounds also exits the harness (that runs along the seam btwn the top bellhousing and the rear of block btw, under the wiper motor as you have discovered. ) with the plug for the O2 sensor. om not 100% on that, but from below i can say they hand dow in the same vicinity. Furthermore there is a bolt to the block above the oil filter that also contains grounds. In my 89, on the bellhousing stud, it also contained a braided wire ground strap that came from the battery area, possibly the chassis to engine ground. i found it was possible to back-calculate what went where from the eyelet size. i will dig up some reference pics from below while going two clutch jobs recently.
if its been this many years, take a deep breath it will all be fine take it one step at a time.
what year ?
dang i thought i had better pics. you can make out the oil filter here:
Forget getting to any of the bellhousing bolts. Too much crap in the way. I see where the harness strap is suppose to mount to one of those bolts but i bet that was for engine install at the factory. My harness is not
going any where. Looking at the fsm it looks like the grounds goto the upper head bolt. Kinda where my wires are laying.
With a reply like that its obvious you have never built
a car. A few line diagrams only get you so far. Its members like Dave who mentioned the wiper motor going in last or the braided ground wire. If every thing
was in the fsm we woulnt need this forum so why dont you get off.
