Default 1996 LT1 Auto Tranny Issues....

Hey guys,
I was driving to campus today and out of the blue, my car completely gave out. I've been having a bunch of problems recently regarding the engine revving higher than it needs too when in drive, but today seemed to be the straw that broke the camel's back. My car would excessively rev while my rear tires would get little to NO power. I had to stop on the side of the road multiple times and just pray that it would go a little extra further. I was able to get back to my campus parking lot, but as I said, the car isn't getting ANY power when I press the gas. I can get up to around maybe 20-30mph at most before the wheels lose power and the motor starts revving up. I fear that it may be the transmission going bad, but I have no way of knowing right now. The worst part is that I'm supposed to be leaving campus in about 4 days, and I live 300 miles away. Does anyone have any insight into what might be wrong? I don't know if it would be worth it to take it to a local mechanic and have them check it out, maybe tow it there? I'm really lost as to what to do, but I'm almost certain it has something to do with the tranny. Any info or support would be much appreciated.

Do a search for 4L60E common problems and read down the 20 or so most common problems. Dan

It sounds like you just kept beating on it hoping for the best. If it was continually over reving, why didn't you stop? You state that you have been having problems with it over reving and then say "Out of the blue..." Not! Did you check the fluid level? If it is very low, that would be the source of your problem. However, at this point, that is probably a moot point. The clutches would be burnt to a crisp from all the torture you gave it. Since you sound pretty in-experienced mechanical wise, your only option is to take it to a shop. They don't sell "Trans in a Bottle" at Best Buy.
