1987...hello. I picked up an 87 to work on it's a project and the car has a very very hard pedal... the previous owner had all new brake lines installed for like $2000.. obviously the car had a brake problem.. this didnt solve it ...the pedal is still very hard as if there's a bad booster.. but there's no hissing in the booster and the vacuum is good. I noticed the fuse for the ABS was taken out of the car which makes me think somebody was trying to bypass the ABS... my question is would a bad, non functioning ABS system or ABS module cause the pedal to be hard and have no pressure? Can I bypass it?
thanks in advance..
My 87 certainly did (ABS pump), I ended up installing a proportioning valve and removing the ABS pump. Pulling the fuse keeps the ABS light from showing in the drivers information panel and disables the ABS system. I tried to open the pump to clean it myself but could not, few have ever had luck cleaning them, they get clogged badly from old fluid. There are 2 repair facilities that are EXPENSIVE, like $1300 bucks expensive. I had to order short brake lines to bypass the ABS pump behind the drivers seat. Open the compartment in the floor and look under the tray. It is imperative you spend time adjusting it correctly if you install this. In the rain especially, too much rear brake and you spin, too little and you (lock up) slide the nose. The only reason I felt comfortable doing this is it is one of the first few iterations of chevrolet ABS, it is only 3 channel , the rears are tied together. My 87 uses I.S.O. also called bubble flare brake lines (not double). https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...iff-pedal.html https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...situation.html
"" Pressure adjustments range from 150-1200 PSI and provide for a maximum decrease of 57% in line pressure, the most of any available valve. Adjuster **** with fine thread tuning provides precise pressure adjustment. This adjustment lets you fine tune the front to rear braking balance by proportionally decreasing the rear brake line pressure.""
