Another mid 80's struggling with OBD1 data
I am currently dragging a very old D865 PERL motherboard out for it's 232 connection. I have tried 2 DIY cables and both TPrt and Winaldl (tried to buy one but vender website didnt accept TD card) . Matched com ports and played with baud rates, delay and inverted signals. I have the 10k resistor in place on A-B and trying to get data from E. When I purchased the car I was given a box that contains the original Memcal. Could a third party ( ADS superchip box ) Memcal be having an effect ?? I have a problem with the car and will have to dig back into it but data could save me from that. Shorting A & B does give code 12 + fans etc.
Thanks for any suggestons.

You should see a 5 byte datastream without 10k (dash data) and a 25 byte data stream with 10k in ALDL mode.
Maybe give EFILiveV4 a try. I think it allows you to see the raw data, but its been a long time since I've played with it.
In all my try's temps are -40 and everything else 0. I have a Sabrent CB-FTDI with drivers as a 232 to USB device but have never seen anything. I tried Win ALDL with 1 transistor cable but I had the 10k in place, should I remove it and try for the dash ? I am key on engine off always. Both live data and dash are unresponsive.
Do you have a way to monitor the serial port? Are you talking O'scope on pin E ??
On arduino 2560's are the receive and transmit that are tied together run straight to E with no resistors / diodes inline ??? I am beginning to doubt the CB-FTDI
Thanks for the help.
I just read EFILiveV4 site and it seems to be used with proprietary hardware.

Regarding EFILive V4: I've used it with a homemade 2-transitor cable about 100 years ago, an old commerciao serial port cable from AKM cables IIRC and also with my Moates USB ALDL cable. Nothing proprietary. I just downloaded it and installed with the free license on my desktop/all in one pc, but I'm not going to drag it out to the car just yet. Sorry, I don't have a working laptop.
Suggest you get an eprom burner and read the ADS Superchip to see what you really have, get a known factory memcal (just in case) and buy a damn commercial cable, or find someone with a known working setup to verify your car and hardware.
I have tried several times including calls and emails. Calls go un answered and the email I got said to try another browser. The problem is My cards have a middle initial on them. Most modern websites have a single slot for your entire name ( full name as listed on card ), the OBDALDL site has a slot for the first and a slot for the last, my bank keeps rejecting it for incomplete name. I have already spent enough for more than one cable........
- Does the average/instantaneous fuel consumption display work during normal driving?
- Does the OD indicator and Shift lamp also function as expected during normal driving?
With the cable plugged in with 10 k resistor, the dash data described above should no longer be working/available. Is this the case?
If so, this is an indication that the ecm has entered ALDL mode and is transmitting 25 bytes at 160 baud and that the issue is with the cable/hardware/interface/software/etc.

2. I have a flickering UPshift light in 4th gear TCC but the TCC does lock , a brush of the brake proves it. Upshift light flicker is on the fix list but I have not got there yet.
I take it the OD light is for a 4+3, I have an auto.
When cable is plugged in with 10k idle immediately goes to 1000 rpm. While idling, all ranges and fuel still showing zero with 10k cable plugged in but not connected to software and not going down the road. I can connect it back to laptop or take it for a short ride tommorow as everything here is a giant mess. I am having to stop and clean up this evening.
Thank you for the help.
