I need to replace a head gasket on my l98 and was hoping to get a little more performance out of the heads while I was doing so. In the future I plan to put in a larger cam, large tube runners, exhaust headers, etc. and I want the heads to be able to keep up.
I'm planning on a 383 stroker build but want to retain the TPI style intake, although I do intend on buying larger tubes and porting the intake base and plenum. I want a little more power out of the car but am not going for a max build. Don't really care about horsepower or quarter times just want the car to be a thrill to drive/ride in.
I've looked into porting the stock heads and vortec heads.
I'm willing to spend around $1k for a complete set of heads and everything I would need to bolt them on to the engine. Lower is better but I'm willing to pay for quality (just not 2k lol)
Hello, you can have the stock 113 heads fully ported and install bigger valves and have a 5 angle valve job. Using Quality light weight valves and beehive valve spring with titanium retainers. Also upgrade the Rocker arms to 1.6:1 Roller Rockers. You can even use thinner head gaskets to bump up compression a bit. I would do a mild aftermarket cam the combination of heads and cam will make a nice up grade. This is what I did to my car. I would port your current plenum and intake base but buy aftermarket runners. I got 108Mph in the 1/4 with stock exhaust headers, just the manifolds, everything else was open exhaust, including the full TPIS Big Tube Flowmaster Mufflers and hi-flo front Y and Free flow catalytic converter. The heads are not going to be the restriction it will be the TPI. I make power up to about 5,600 rpms and shift at 6,000. A good head shop will do the work, mine did cost me about $1,200 which was about $800 less than my dream AFR heads. Good luck, please post your results...
Mine has older Edelbrock 6085's (I think that is the PN). I consider them mild as they have 165cc runners, but do have 2.02/1.60 valves and a fast burn chamber which are nice traits. The original owner of mine cannot recall why they were replaced, probably the car overheated and warped/cracked the original heads.
You might be able to find a set used as people tend to upgrade often to bigger and badder stuff. Swap meets, ebay, maybe Camaro/Firebird pages even!
The 113 heads will pickup fairly well if you do the standard blending but I wouldn't waste the time on a full port for these.......the mentioned 5 angle valave job is great too but you can get into 2K easily with these heads and still be behind an out of the box Dart 180.....
The Vortec isn't a good option as you are buying a $500 intake base right off the bat to make it work.......
