Hi all, I have an 85 C4 and I am wanting to rebuild the engine. I’ve been doing research, but it is hard to remember everything. I was wondering if anyone could give me a complete list of parts that I need and modifications (boring and machining) that needs to be done. I’m pretty handy and can physically rebuild it, I just am not capable of actually piecing all the parts together to make the engine run. Thanks.
If You go to CNC Motorsports they have a bunch of 383 Kits You can buy. I went with the Scat Crank, 6" Rod and ICON Pistons. This web site and others will give you an idea of what parts you will need to do the bottom end. As far as machining goes there really isn't any that is done any differently than any other rebuild, other than possibly grinding some clearance along the Oil Pan surface.

Do I have to have it tuned or buy any chips or anything?
In most cases you will need a chip that can function well... I would keep it simple and just get a chip burned, keep as many things as possible stock or just a step over.
the 383 requires bigger injectors and usually a good free flow exhaust. 85' is Mass Air Control and the injectors fire twice on each back in the rotation of batch fire not sequential so the extra shot of fuel is good for the bigger cubes. An Adjustable Fuel Pressure Regulator set to about 60 PSI on 30Lbs injectors should be fine.
The secret to running the stock computer and a mild chip is keeping the camshaft just one or two steps above stock. A newer year computer from I believe 87 or so has faster processors. The beauty of a MASS air car is that it measures the actual amount of air, temperature, atmospheric pressure and humidity going into the engine that correlates to a flexible table to adjust timing and fuel delivery etc. Cheers - Jarrod,
PS Great name fella! lol...
Leave your injectors as they are, don't increase the fuel pressure. Drive the car, then tinker if you think it's necessary. A 383 will not need a new tune if the cam/heads are stock. Only my opinion and experience.

There is no real answer until you decide on your engine combination. Another way to do it is to reverse engineer it. In other words talk to a Tuner on what he has done in the past and then build the engine to work with his tune.
