I wish I had found this thread sooner because I think I seem to be the latest to fall head first into the Standard LX320 pick up coil rabbit hole. Mine is probably a familiar story - after my 1988 C4 (RHD conversion Australia) suddenly stopped from being a perfect runner I eventually found I needed a new pick up coil and my first mistake was buying a Standard LX320 from Rock Auto followed quickly by my second mistake which was paying a mechanic friend to fit it. We got the car to run (sort of) but three recent, seperate, frustrating, puzzling, unsuccessful attempts to do proper base timing on it was hopeless and I started searching the web for much needed answers.
Thankfully I found this thread and I have now sourced what I hope to be a working WVE 4P1209 type pick up coil to start the whole (costly) process again. Kudos to those members who contributed to this thread and in particular Vets-Vet for his informative follow up.

Reason: incorrect part no.
Just came across a great youtube video - GM HEI Pick Up Coils Troubleshooting and Differences which, amongst other things, shows the simple compass test to check the correct polarity of a suitable GM pick up coil and explains why the wave form produced by an incorrect opposite polarity pick up coil (such as Pontiac) would fire the GM ICM at the wrong time.
Google it if your interested.
