I have a ZF traany out of a 92 that whines in the first 4 gears. I'm to the point where I want to crack it open, I understand that ZF now sells parts to rebuild these units, has anyone out there attempted this our know where I could get a manual? Thanks
The ZF in my LT4 car also whines. 1st is loudest. Gradually diminshes until it cannot be heard in 4th. Returns slightly in 5th. I would associate it more to a high pitched gear whine as opposed to bearing (aka front counter or input shaft bearing) noise. My experience with bearing noises has them making a lower pitched noise. I dont know anyone locally who has a Vette ZF to compare it to. Would I be safe in saying that as long as its quieter than a Winston Cup road track car trans, its OK???? Is this the same symptoms that your ZF has, MAC383?
Cripe! A Winston car has straight cut race gears and their whine can be heard for miles...much like a "60's garbage truck with 500K miles on it. My trans does not whine noticeably when the clutch pedal is out. It is barely audible. Standard Gear is the primary distributor for ZF parts. They will offer you the deepest discount, if you pass yourself off as a transmission shop or Jobber.
I assume you've changed your fluid recently?? Fresh fluid greatly reduces gear whine in healthy transmissions. It also minimizes gear, bearing, bearing surface and shaft wear that "causes" chronic noise and necessitates rebuild.
