before my last engine build, i did a lot of research on heads. afr's seem to be about the best the the money. to get a big improvement over them you will need to spend almost twice as much
AFR heads are very good. High quality peices that flow well and are reasonably priced. But , depending on how much power you want , you are usually better off having your stock LT heads worked instead of buying new aftermarket heads. :seeya
They are great heads for the money. Much thicker deck than the LT1 heads. Just the ticket for boost or nitrous. Having a set of LT1 heads CNC ported so they flow better will cost nearly as much as the AFR's. AFR's flow like the dickens right out of the box. With a little bowl work they really cook.
AFR heads are about as good as you can get without going to someone really specialized in porting/polishing and paying BIG BIG bucks to get a seet of heads done.
Here is a picture of the cnc work that everyone is talking about. These are my AFR 190s. Click the pic to enlarge.
Looks like I will be getting me a set :D Now just got to figure out which set....anyone use the LT4 racing set-up on the street? I like the fact that there is know core charge....because I might go with the LT4 version. :yesnod:
I have talked with a lot of builders in the last few months and what everyone is saying is that the AFR's are great.....But I have also talked with some people who can work my stock LT-1 head equal or better to what the AFR 190 LT-1 head is at.
At .500 lift the AFR LT-1 190 flow 260 int and 190 exh(the AFR LT-4 195cc is the same). The AFR LT-4 210 flow 273 int and 205 exh. The AFR LT-4 220 flow 280 int and the same 205 exh. The AFR LT-4 227 flow 288 int and 205 exh.
So you can see they all flow really well. In my search for the best person to work my heads I took a look at Total Engine Airflow(you probably recognize this name from Nathan Plemons sig). My goal when speaking with them was get near 370rwhp with hot cam and headers which they said was very achievable for a price which was quoted to be less than the cheapest AFR's. This also included valves springs, chromoly retainers, ferrea valves, etc.. Saying all this I have decieded to go this route with my heads instead of going with the new AFR's.. In the end either is a good choice if what you get satisfies your needs...
If you think that nitrous or a blower is in your future sell your heads and put that toward the AFR heads. Not only would it be less out of the pocket expense but much stronger than porting what you have now.
