You said if you have a large HEI distributor you need to convert to a small cap w separate coil. On the Fitech 8350 description it says "plus the harness plugs into the factory distributor," So, did you have to convert to a small cap?
yes , I obtained a small cap fir a 1989 iroc. It mentions the small cap in the instructions. It wasn’t difficult, I needed to mount the external coil and wiring
Idle issues are tricky with new setups, because it's reacting fast with IAC and Timing changes both trying to catch it, often too quick and too sensitive... and if the timing is advanced too much it may be on the downward side of the curve having the opposite effect... You can see this in datalogs. Alternately, lower the base timing tables to say 14 degrees advance for the whole block up to 1300 rpm or so and check with a timing light. If it still doesn't idle it may jump around a lot but if you hold the throttle fairly steady at say 1000rpm you can confirm timing.
Thank you, I just did it myself. It was decent out of the box as self learning, but needed some adjustments after the break in. I plan on a gear and pro charger later this year. If that happens I'll take it in for Dyno tuning.
I also installed a FIRST TPI with my FITECH. I replaced a ported Edelbrock high Flo system. The FIRST feels like a different motor. Tons more torque and it pulls in every gear. It’s still in learning mode and I recently converted to a Zf6 so I’m easy on the clutch . Life run it up to 5600 and backed off . The car is a blast to drive. I’m not sure how much HP it has but I’m shocked when I look down at the speedometer and realize how fast it’s going and how quickly it gets there.
