Default Oil pan removal

Manual says to remove left cat. Is this really necessary on a 96 LT1?

Thanks

The left cat doesn't need to be removed on the 96 M6, not sure about the A4.

I remove the left cat on my '92 LT1 to make it easirer to remove the filter adapter on the block. The filter adapter has to come off to remove the pan.

Do the #1 or #2 pistons need to be in any particular position so that the crank throws allow the pan to come off? :)

On my 88 it does have to be in certain position to take the pan out. By the time you try to take the oil pan out and if it stuck then you can rotate the crank out of the way.

I remove the motor mount nuts, and raise the engine about an inch instead. This doesn't take long, and makes it much easier.

How do you raise the engine an inch using only jack? The only way I can think of your way is with engine lift and chain. That is way too much work just to take the oil pan out.

I put a section of 2x8 under the transmission pan and use a large manual scissors jack -- I don't like to use hydraulic jacks in this situation.
If done properly, this doesn't dent the transmission pan.

Where do you jack the engine when the oil pan is being removed? :)

My previous post assumes that the vehicle has an automatic transmission.
My vehicle has an automatic, and I jack the engine up from under the automatic transmission pan. I've done this several times, and it doesn't cause a problem. Just be careful you don't raise the engine/transmission combination too high that it contacts the transmission tunnel, etc. -- It only takes about one inch for clearance.
For a six speed, I don't know if it will work.
