Since I have my engine completely out of my '85, if I wanted to change gears, would now be the time to do it? I see several posts about people changing their gears, I'm assuming for more low-end torque.
How do you tell what gears you have in the first place? I didn't put the first 383 in this Corvette and I have no idea if they messed with them at all.
Jacking the car up,rotating the rear wheels, and counting the turns of the driveshaft is the easiest way. That should get you close. Your RPO code may help, but since there's already been one replacement engine, chances are there are already good gears in there.
