Okay, I know it is a major pain from previous post, but, I'm having trouble. I've got everything done except for removing the large plastic nut that holds the tube to the bezel nut. It won't budge. As a bonus, the bezel nut is turning enough so that I'm getting no leverage at all on the plastic nut. Is there some special tool, or do I have a weak hand grip. Also, couldn't they find a place a little harder to reach? Thank God I am 6'3" and have long arms. How does a short guy reach this.
Help. I'll also do a search.
Also, the motor runs all the time and the mast is up. Is this a repairable problem or just replace. It was up all the time and when I removed the wheel well, I found that the wires were cut. I repaired that and turned the key and the motor runs all the time (no antenna movement).
If it has to be replaced, is a direct replacement available. A friend with an 86 did his last week and what he got as a replacement (from Chevrolet) looked like a generic thing with multiple grometts and it sticks up over the body. Looks like, well, you know.
Removing the wheel and liner helps alot if you haven't already done that. If your motor runs, but the mast is stuck, then you should need only a new mast from GM. I'm not sure though, because my '89 is slightly different than an '85. I bought a new mast for about $30 from GM and it came with the socket for the nut on top that you're dealing with. The socket works ok, but not great. I was able to get mine off with it. Again, mine is a different year and the antennas are different, so this info may be useless to you, but for my '89: Once I removed the top nut, you could pull the old mast and ribbon out with a little force. Then remove the gear cover and remove any fragments that are left inside the gear housing. Reassemble motor housing and install in car except for the top nut. Lube the new ribbon with Vaseline and hold the mast and ribbon straight with the teeth pointed towards left side of car (I think). Turn the radio on, have an assistant turn the radio off as you feed the ribbon down the tube. The motor will pull the ribbon in. Push the mast into place and install and tighten the top nut. Now run the antenna up and down with the radio (on/off) a few times and it should work properly and adjust itself. The motor should only run with power on/off switch at the radio. Hope this helps a little.
I have a '92 and my mast is stuck 'up'. The motor runs properly. I purchased a replacement mast, which came with the cylindrical tool to remove the nut surrounding the old mast. The nut unscrews OK, but I still can't get the old mast off. Do I have to replace the whole damn motor?
Once you get the nut off, just pull the mast. You have to pull pretty hard. It might help to turn the radio on (mast up postion for motor). Make sure that you remove any fragments left inside the gear housing.
You can get a replacement antenna(everything) from www.tld-corvette.com Got mine there for $88. It's much easier to remove and replace than repair I think(depends on you of course).
Mr. Mojo is right. listened to him, bought the entire antenna assembly and its going well. garage got too cold to finish but i'm sure this is the best way for me to go. car is up in the air waiting for temps over 20 degrees to finish :mad
