Default HELP Block is toast :(

I guess the machine shop stated that this Block looks starved for oil and the metal in the saddle has been compromised turned balck and blue. They have to take off 40 to 50 thousanths and the builder does not feel comfortable building my 383 like this. I guess i need a short block LT1. Any Ideas ?

I don't know enough about machining to make an honest assessment.

But considering he has nothing to gain from you getting a shortblock, I would trust his expertise.

If the block has never been overbored before, then 0.040" over isn't too bad, but I would feel a little leary appproaching that 0.050" overbore. The max overbore on that block is 0.060" over, and if you're running a tightly wound or forced induction 383, or live in some of the hotter climates, you're definitely much better off with a fresh block.
