Perplexed - Coolant disappearing
Where is the other bleed screw ????
Thx ... Jim
I borrowed a pressure tester from my friend down at XPRESS LUBE. Put dye in the coolant.
Pressure tested at 16 PSI cold and checked for leaks with a black light. Pressure held for a couple of hours. No evidence of leak.
Next day, Wednesday, I ran car and pressure tested "hot" overnight. Pressure was leaking down at about the same speed. Pressurized system before bed and got up early and checked with black light. There was a small spot on the basement floor that illuminated but I couldn't tell where it came from although it appeared to be right below the water pump.
Last night I backed the car in and pressure tested hot. Had the same spot on the floor this morning. Jacked the car up and got my large 6'7" 270# frame underneath with the black light. Still couldn't see where the leak was coming from. Then a drop hit me on the forehead. It was dark and all I had was the black light. Still nothing conclusive. On a hunch, I put a paper towel under the hose connection where the TB had been bypassed. This connection was right in front of the water pump. Within a few minutes, a drop fell into the paper towel. WOW, problem solved. Repaired the connection and pressurized the system. Still leaked down, however, I happened to see bubbles coming out of the small hose attached to the expansion tank. This hose is molded to a metal tube about 1 foot from the expansion tank. I repaired the end of the hose, pressurized the system and it did not loose pressure the rest of the day.
Topped off the coolant this afternoon and drove the car. I no longer smell coolant when I stop. Maybe this cured the problem. Hope so. I will monitor the coolant level for the next few days.
Jim
