Default digital dash 89

My digital dash on my 89 is bright but I cant see any digits or anything. Im going to get the polarizing film and see if that shows anything. If I take out the cluster on the 89 will the cruise and tc lockup be functional still nor will I lose them with it out

Anyone have advice on removal such as pull the dash and how to do it, I saw the video on batee but I remember trying to pull the dash on my old 84 and I never got it out something was holding it still near the windshield at the passenger side. I saw where they took the door off the fuse panel is there a screw in there to remove the dash?

To pull the cluster out:
Adjust steering down as far as it goes
unscrew tilt steering stalk
remove light switch ****, remove screws holding the trim and remove trim panel
not completely necessary but can help to remove trim over center stack
unscrew screws holding cluster
pull cluster straight out some, reach behind, disconnect wiring connector and remove cluster

Buy some polarized sunglasses. If that lets you see the digits then youll know its a film issue.

will I lose the tc lockup with it out? Im pretty sure 84 the speed sensor went to the cluster first then to the ecm, later years the speed sender company went to the ecm and then to the cluster dont know about 89 but Im thinking it should operate the lockup with the cluster out

The cruise will not work. I dont know about the lockup.
:edit: I'm looking at the manual, and it references a signal from the ECM. When u think about it, that's the way it was with the throttle body stuff I used to mess with.

I would like to know what functions will be lost with it out as Im considering replacement gauges. I had an 84 but think its different in that the speed sensor signal went to the cluster first and from there to the ecm. It might be different on 89. I liked the cluster on my 91 a lot more though. I have ordered a gps speedometer with rpm fuel level water temp and oil pressure Im hoping to use at least temporarily

The polarized film replacement isn’t hard, it can be done in a few hours. Order the kit from batee and in the meantime, use polarized sunglasses like 2011KLR said if you need to see your gauges. Swap to real gauges if you want to, but the 80s clusters look great when working properly.

Disconnecting those two wiring connectors really got me, lol. I took mine out once just to change a bulb in it, and literally spent half a day trying to figure out how to unplug it. Buddy of mine came over and took exactly 20 seconds to do it. I didn't realize they lock in place.

I had to replace the film in my 89 a few years ago. It took me probably 12 hours just to get the old film off the 3 glass panels. The old film came off in like 4 different layers, then had to get adhesive remover and razor blades to scrape it off and cross my fingers the panels didn't break. I also ordered the roller that Batee sells that he says helps to get the new film to lay down evenly.

I applied the new film in the dark with a powerful headlamp so I could see dust and used canned air to blast off dust before laying down the new film.

Or Batee does offer a service where you can ship him your instrument panel or maybe if you just shipped him the glass pieces and let him do it if you want.
