Is it just to take of the spring / retainers and
"tap" them out? What should I do with the littel plastic "ring" on the vavle ends?
Some vavles are a littel tight to take out, is taping with a screwdriver ok?
Assuming the heads are off the car (!), yeah, it's normal to have some gunk buildup on the valve stems that require you to tap them out with something. As far as the "plastic ring on the valve ends", I'm not sure what you're referring to. Maybe it's a lash cap, but someone else will have to clear that up. Anyone?
What are you trying to do? Replacing the valve stem seals? If it is the seals, you need to have a valve spring compressor and a magnetic pen. Compress the spring enough for the valve retainer to loosen up then use the magnetic pen to pick it up... Its not plastic...
I believe what he's talking about is the plastic ring which provides the upper stop for the umbrella-style valve seals. If you're going to replace the valve seals (which you should do), you can just rip those off, as the new seals should have new rings. Personally, I would not replace them with the stock umbrella-style seals, but that's just me. When I ported my heads two weeks ago, I replaced the seals with Teflon seals, though they require some machining to the stock valve guide boss to install them.
The rings *should* come with the new valve seals if you reinstall the factory style umbrella seals. If you do not use that type of seal, you do not need the rings.
