Installing a timing chain question
I am trying to put the timing set on, I am using a GM performance single roller timings set and a Summit Racing crankshaft, both new.
When I put the crank sprocket on it stops about 1/2 inch from the end of the snout and won't go further back. The timing chain is "slanted" with it in this position, so it needs to go further back. On inspection it appears there is a small ridge in the crank that it is stopping on. This is imperceptable to the naked eye, but I can feel it. There is a bevil on the inside of the crank sprocket which implies it is supposed to seat at the base of the snout.
Is the crank gear supposed to be pressed on? On the other engines I built (Buicks mostly) it was a slip fit. I am sure I can press it on, I'm just not sure that is how it is supposed to work..
Be sure the timing mark is on the front where you can see it.
Bang it on with a 5-pounder. I have a slider-sleeve from an old 3 speed transmission that I've used for a very long time. A piece of plumbing pipe would also work. I've also heated them with a torch and they slip right on.
