Default Is the crankshaft to flywheel dowell required?

I am putting a new engine in my 89 with a ZF. The old engine had an alignment pin in the back of the crankshaft that lines up with the flywheel (a roll pin). Do I need this? The new crank in the new engine has a hole but does not have the pin and I am not sure I can get it out of the old engine without mangling it.

In general yes, dowels are often a significant part of the integrity of such unions

Try to get a new one from dealer or rock auto or something
