2 weeks ago I went to get my 86 ready for a car show the next morning after parking it for the winter. The lights in the interior worked just fine but when I went to go start it it wouldn't start. So after jumping it it started right away, but when removing the cables it died. Took my alternator in and the stater went bad, so ordered a new alternator. In the meantime I only disconnected the positive terminal and forgot to disconnect the negative terminal on the battery while I waited for my new alternator. The pulley on the back of thw new alternator would turn but you really had to wrench it with your hand to get it to turn whereas my other pulley on the back of the old alternator turned very freely. Anyways, just put the new alternator in yesterday and got a new battery today and it started right up, but it squealed like crazy. Any idea what the squealing is?
By description of new alternator they screwed up on shimming or something else is very wrong, alternators generally spin by hand not under load and under it would at most feel like opening a jar of olives.
So it goes back it's Not right or you can take the pulley off and between the 2 make 1
Send it back. Remanufactured ones are basically all that’s available now, I bought a total of 3 this year (Duralast, Remy & AC DELCO), each one was so obviously defective (seized pulley, bent housing, etc.) that I didn’t even bother to install them. I ended up having a local starter repair shop rebuild my original one. It works so far and actually cost less than a “new” alternator.
