I just had my original LT4 damper rebuilt by Damper Doctor out of California. The redone damper looks great; however, I noticed a couple of thing that are inconsistent with the prior condition. First, the single weight on the front of the damper (yellow circle) is now missing. Second, the relationship between the inner and outer rings has changed (see yellow lines).
Given the weight was there for a reason and the holes drilled on the back are also part of balancing the damper, how much of an issue is this going to be?
I am just taking a wild guess here. They maybe don't care about keeping the original alignment of the two pieces as the balance would maybe still be off. They just put it together close knowing they will have to rebalance it anyway. Dan
The Damper Doctor (as the name implies) only does dampers and driveshaft balancing. At this point, it is what it is. Buying a new damper off Rock Auto or any other store would put me in the same position. I guess I'm going to have to trust John.
By the way, the LT4 damper is actually 3 pieces. Inside there is another metal ring, hence the "dual mass" denomination on this unit. John told me that when he pulled the damper out of the furnace, 3 pieces came out. The furnace burns off the old rubber.
He had never done an LT4 damper before and in fact, had to create a new jig just to be able to inject the new rubber.
I had him do one for my Ford 4.9 this spring, turned out fine. I would expect whatever was sent to you is just fine (and probably better than stock)...granted my 4.9 is out of steam at 3500rpm and yours is just getting going!
Also, I passed on any offshore made junk for the truck as they are well known to delaminate among other things.
