I have a 1951 Chev Sedan Delivery restomod with a C4 L98 engine. When it was purchased it came with the automatic transmission. The transmission went out on it just recently. I am trying to figure out what the best option would be for fixing it.

I have heard that the 86 automatic transmission is not built as well as the 87. But, without the core it would be considerably more money to swap it out. In the long term I would like to put in a 6-speed manual, but from what I understand that would be major bucks to do that. Does anyone have any input or suggestions?

Far more information needed. When you say it "went out", what do you mean? It blew a hole in the case? It slips? It won't shift? It won't move?........???? The '86 700R4 is not necessarily built "not as good" as the '87 version. It is just a different design. There are thousands of pre '87 units working just fine depending on usage. What are you using the car for? Occasional drive to car shows? Daily driver? Sitting in your driveway to look at? Expand your information.

I live in the middle of nowhere so I just purchased TODAY a rebuilt unit from o'reilly's auto part store. It's built by power torque out of Milwaukee WI shipped to the store with the three-year warranty. It was approximately $2200 including the $300 core charge including the torque converter... should bolt up to my 1989 L89 engine.
