Default [check engine light] HOT CAM

Got my car out tonight and the check engine light came on after about 2 miles. Put in the cam early this week but just now getting the light. Is this normal? Any way to turn the light out? Need to get it tuned now with the cam?
I do think it could be running a little rich down low.
Car runs great....its just the light...I think..any help would be great.

thanks,
jeff

You'll have to pull the code and then see what it is. Chances are the PCM detected a misfire (You do have a GS, right?). Only the OBDII computers of the 96+ will detect the misfire. You may have to raise your idle slightly from what I have read from others.

People will only be able to offer you guesses like I have until you pull the code. The tool that will read the code can also reset it, clearing the light.

10-1 it's a P0300 code (Random Cylinder Misfire).

I'm dealing with that issue now in my LT1 to LT4/Hotcam conversion. The misfire codes affect my torque converter lockup.

If you have access to PCM programming, bumping up the idle should take care of it OR you could turn off SES activation associated with the code.

The Hotcam seems to like 900+ idle speeds for eliminating misfires.

I've also read from Chris Bennight (sp?) of Demon Motorsports fame, that reprogramming for a bit more fuel at lower (idle/off idle) rpm helps too. Although with LT1 Edit it looks like a pain.

Note: I want to say that the misfires that are detected by the OBDII system are minor and emissions related. Your engine is most likely running fine and it's the characteristics of the cam that are causing the detected misfires.

If you install the Hot Cam....you need to reprogram the PCM. :yesnod:

:iagree:

Very common with a Hot Cam equipped OBD-II car. Raising the idle will help, but typically won't completely cure it. Disabling it or reducing the range where it can read is the best thing to do. I wouldn't be suprised if your not throwing an o2 sensor code either... hot cam likes to run rich with stock programming.

If you disconnect the battery for 15 seconds or so, it will reset the codes, but it's going to come back on. They sell code readers at autoparts stores that let you read the codes and clear them.

You've got three main choices with programming...

Ed Wright - going to charge $350, plus upgrades are 175.
PCMFORLESS $175, upgrades are 50.
LT1 Edit type software - $550.

I personally used PCMforless with very good results, but if you plan on doing a lot of tweaking, buying LT1 edit is the way to go.. will save you cash in the long run.

i get the code intermittently. if you can't read the codes, autozone will for free. Just reset it and wait for it to come back..

Maybe, maybe not. You need to get the codes first. Perhaps a sensor went bad during the conversion. I wouldn't have someone reprogram the car with out knowing what's wrong first. As a point of a reference, we installed a hot cam in my Dad's LT4 and it never ever set the check engine light in that configuration...

in the mean time, any way to disable the light? Can I check the codes somehow?
You need a special code reader for an OBDII car. Cheapest units are the ones that interface with a laptop. Search the net and you'll find one.
