I bought a Hurst short throw shifter fo my 90 Convertible. The first two lines on the
instructions are remove X crossmember and remove the exhaust system from the exhaust manifolds. If there is anybody out there that has installed one? Is this necessary? Can it all be reached from the inside?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Re: c4 Hurst Billit plus Shifter Installation (90Conv)
Yes, I did one without removing the exhaust. Its not that hard. Just get it up high on a lift with a good light, and you will be fine. There is a pin that need to be removed from the bottom that is why they ask you to remove the exhaust. But with another set of hands handy, a long pair of needle nose, and a punch+hammer, you will be fine. It will be hard to replace the zip tie that you cut off to get to the drift pin. But other than that its not hard at all!
Re: c4 Hurst Billit plus Shifter Installation (90Conv)
I did mine last weekend on the floor in my garage, hence no lift, just 4 jack stands, and I removed the exhaust. I searched the forum archives on this topic and found that there were some who did it w/o removing the exhaust, but most of them said they would remove it if they were to do it again. And no, you can't do it all from inside the car. You have to do a good deal of work from under the car.

No! I've tried without doing it from underneath. You may not have to remove the exhaust but it comes down to how small you hand are and are you a contortionist. Its easier with the exhaust out, but can be done other wise. You HAVE to access this job from inside and out. Should only take about three hours max with the right tools....good luck

Did it without removing the exhaust on my convert. PIA, You have to have small hands to get in there. Did a buddys by removing the exhaust. Went in so much easier. Definitely worth the extra few minutes to remove. Saved a bunch of time in the end.
