Default Crossover pipe question

Say my exhaust is 2.5 in and I wanted to add in a crossover pipe just before the flowmasters. Years ago the conventional wisdom was that you went with the crossover larger than the rest of the exhaust system, say 3 in in my case. Is this still the way to go?

I have not heard that, but in my case I just did a custom exhaust on my LT1. I put a crossover pipe just before the mufflers, since I didn't know any better about the size, I went with a smaller crossover tube than my exhaust pipes. It works, I have little to no resonance.
