Default Wheel Squeaks Loudly......

I was drivin home last night after some ritual rice burning, my :cuss wheel (the drivers rear) started making this ear-curling squeal. It did it all the way home, and its not going away. I had to drive home at 20mph because I was afraid I was gonna lose a wheel or something  . Any idea what this could be?? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

I am having the same problem although it hasn't gotten that bad yet. I went through a process of elimination and thought I had it identified as the wheel bearing. Replaced it. Noise still there. I guess that would leave the outboard left universal. I will watch this thread to see what other replies you get.

Good luck to us both.

Definitely check the U-joints in the half shafts. I had this happen to me, the worst noise you can imagine. When I pulled the U-joints out two were so froze up they would not pivot at all. Not that big of a job to do by yourself just make sure you mark the suspension before you loosen it to get the half shaft out.

Good luck

what does changing the halfshaft u joints entail? And also when i get them out is there a way to figure out if they are the problem or not???

I believed it entail buying two U-joints (might as well change the other one while you're at it). Drop the muffler, jack the rear spring at certain spot, you don't want to scratch or chip the spring. Remove the nut from the spring bolt. Next disconnect the tie rod end. Remove the bolts that hold the spindle support rod to the knuckle. Remove the bolts and straps that hold the universal joint. take the shaft out...
You need a press or a large Vise and various round stock to take the u-joint out of the yoke and put new one in.
I copied this from Corvette Fever May 2002 issue

My brother and I just replaced the rear transmission seals two weeks ago so the parts about dropped the muffler was easy but taking the shaft out is not that fun but doable.

You can't always confirm the u-joint is the problem when you have taken it out. Sometimes it will be very rough or obviously loose making it a dead give away but sometimes it will feel perfectly normal but still have enough wear that it is only noticeable under load. I have seen both of these cases, my half shafts were so bad that I could not move them when I got them out but my drive shaft u-joints felt fine and when replaced a bad vibration went away. Sounds like VQT has a pretty good description for changing them but if I were you I would change both the left and right sides while you are at it.

Hope this takes care of the problem
