I have a L98 6sp and I recently replaced the compressor clutch because it was slipping. I hoped there wasn’t an underlying issue but apparently there was.
I don’t believe there’s an issue with the clutch gap because it worked fine for several weeks before it started slipping again. It won’t start slipping immediately only after driving for a while.
When I replaced the clutch I also had to recharge the AC. Maybe I added too much refrigerant? I used that envirosafe R12 replacement stuff. I’m also wondering if I need to add oil.
The AC blows ice cold.
The compressor is not locked up, at least not permanently. I can turn it with my hand (car off) and there’s resistance but I wouldn’t say it’s hard to turn.
Any advice about what to do/check is appreciated. I’m not really even sure what is causing the problem.
Sure you don’t have low tension on the belt?
maybe weak idler spring or worn belt new EPDM belts don’t crack you need the gauge to check them (just plastic card)
I don't think so. It's definitely the compressor clutch slipping and not the belt. I couldn't get it to slip while I was looking at it but I did see a small cloud of clutch material eject from between the pulley and pressure plate when I activated the AC.
