Hello all, yesterday me and my dad managed to get the transmission out of my corvette (we are investigating two problems: the car rattles violently when reverse is used, and a sort of screeching noise can be heard when the clutch is engaged at around 2k rpm; this second issue has a post on my account regarding it: https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...ing-noise.html ). Upon a basic inspection, we found that what appears to be the pilot bearing fell out of place (pics attached). Neither of us are really mechanics but we don't think the pilot bearing should be like this. Can I get any advise regarding what should be done about this? Should I take it out completely and inspect it more thoroughly or something else? Anything would be helpful, thanks in advance.
Pull the clutch out if old replace, get a new Pilot make sure it's not sticking on input shaft if smooth install the new Pilot and hopefully you have a happy car
That is definitely the pilot bearing and probably the cause of your problems.
I would pull and replace the clutch and inspect the flywheel. Most clutches come with a new pilot bearing, on the bright side you won't have to deal with the mess that comes with getting the old one out.
