Default 89 MAF problem?

Howdy!

My 89 Convertible has been sitting up for about 2 months. Up until today it had been started long enough to drive on and then off a trailer during my move.

Before it was stored there was a couple of occasions in which the engine temperature had gone high and then the car would stutter, stall then not start for awhile. A shot of WD-40 in the intake would get it started and then run for a bit - then the engine would die as soon as I put the air intake back on. Since taking the air intake hose off took the air filter and MAF out of the loop, is there a strong chance that the MAF has failed?

When I drove the car today it drove fine over to the grocery store, about .5 miles away. But when I left the grocery store it started for about 30 seconds and then died. When I tried to restart it would start, but if I gave it gas it'd die. Doing the MAF bypass worked and then engine ran fair, enough to get home.

If you agree it is the MAF (don't really see how it could be anything else) what do you recommend for a replacement? I have pretty much a stock engine except for 160 degree thermo and ZR1 style exhaust from M/A.

Thanks for the help.

Bill

Are you getting check engine lite? It sounds like the MAF. I had to replace my MAF because the car set in the carport for two years and it was not ran but a few times. I was getting a MAF code from the computer, but not all the time. I changed the MAF and was still having some problems. I next replaced the two relays for the MAF and solved the problem. GM recommends replacing the relays when you replace the MAF. I thought it was just to get more money, but it solved my problems.

good luck

You could try replacing the MAF power and the burn off relays first.

Try a local bone yard for a used MAF from a 3rd gen F-body. I am now running the MAF from my '86 IROC in my '88 Vette and the Wells MAF went into the IROC.

Thanks for the input. I ordered a digital multitester and a MAF tester tool so hopefully sometime next week I'll know if the MAF has failed or if it is a relay.

I had mucho problems with my 89 until I replaced both the MAF and O2 sensors. Just a word of advice on buying new GM parts: Try Jeff Kopp, Superior Chevrolet for prices. I am using him for the first time and I thought I was getting a discount at a local GM dealer!!! Here is his email address and he will give you prices using email: parts@superchevyperformance.com

How do the prices compare to non-OEM equipment? I doubt my car will ever be a collectors item and as long as the part(s) come with a decent warranty for the price, I don't care who the manufacturer is. (Joe Bob's bar 'b' q and MAF sensors wouldn't qualifiy)

I can share with you some prices from Jeff. I damaged the aluminum distributor cover when my plenum fell off a table (I'm with stupid!). A search for a new cover yielded a price of $25 to $35 on EBay. Jeff is going to sell me a brand new one from GM for $15 plus some pennies. My EGR valve is shot! My dealer wants $75 for a new one. Jeff has priced me a new one from GM for $45 plus some pennies. I will have to pay shipping to my residende! Regards, Sam :yesnod:
