Chambered Exhaust !
Some time ago I was reading a post about someone who had purchased a set of "Chambered Exhaust System" for their C-4's, like those for sale in Mid-America and also Ecklers. My question is, who is the manufacture of this exhaust system, what is the cost from the dealer etc. How difficult are they to install , once installed is there resonance inside the car . How loud are they at idle, and cruising on the highway at speed. If anyone has a set installed on their C-4 I would really appreciate any information about this system. Thanks in advance

The manufacturer for the MAD pipes I believe is Sweet Thunder at http://www.sweet-thunder.com/
What I bought is at http://www.sweet-thunder.com/cbs_92-96.htm
They are licensed to manufacture the NOS pipes for early Chevys including 69 Z28 and Malibu SS 396. They make replacement sections for the side pipe mid year Corvettes.
I will have dyno numbers soon, but that will be after major engine mods so I have no before/after.
Like most aftermarket cat-backs they are loud at WOT. What I like most is how rich they sound at cruising rpms. I find myself coasting down hills in lower gears just to hear them burble and sound off. They will rattle the trees and scatter the Mustang boys at WOT.
Surrpisingly, I have not been stopped by any cops.
My system was purchased from Mid-America Direct for $550.00 plus shipping cost.
As far as the installation went, it is a great asset to be mechanically inclined as there were a few rough spots during installation. One issue was that MAD did not send NECESSARY hardware! :banghead: This problem resulted in a trip to Home Depot in order to purchase stainless steel nuts and bolts. The original nuts and bolts were not usuable as they are welded in place on the factory set-up. This was not an oversight, as a friend of mine subsequently ordered the same exhaust system for his car and he did not receive the necessary hardware either. :(
While the system is mandrel bent (which is nice), there were a few "fitment" issues with some of the pipe. It was not that bad, but did require a bit of effort to manually shape the pipe in order to obtain a proper fit in a few spots.
The system does come with all necessary clamps, however I did not care for the ones that were provided for the rear tailpipe section and purchased a different style. That is personal preference, though.
Removal of the old system and installation of the new one took about 3 hours.
As far as exhaust tone, I am limited in my ability to relay that to you - my car has sat in the garage since the installation due to poor weather. :cry I have only been able to hear it at idle and rev....it sounds great though. The ad in MAD states that it sounds like a mid-year with sidepipes and I 'll have to say that that is rather accurate.
While mine has sat since installation, my friend ('94 convertible) was able to take his out and around the block after installation. Since I helped with his install I was able to get a better idea on what it sounds like outside the garage. ;)
I will say that it has an aggressive sound to it under throttle. When my friend took off around his development, I lost sight of him but could still clearly hear his car. When he returned, I told him to wipe that huge, silly grin from his face. He loves it. It is a far cry from the stock system.
At idle, it sounds like it has "purpose" (does that make sense?). It's not loud, but it's not quiet. It has a nice rumble to it that let's you know that there is something to the car under the hood. To me, the stock system sounds like a Buick at idle. :nono:
As far as interior noise, I was able to ride with him for a bit and yes, there is more interior noise than the stock system. My ride was rather short, so I don't have much seat time with the system. If increased interior noise is going to bother you at all, then reconsider. It's not obnoxious, but it is not quiet like the stock system. I don't have any highway driving experience with it, sorry.
To me, this system allows the Corvette to sound as it should have when it left the factory. :reddevil :auto:
