Is there any other way to pull & read codes on a 90 Vette other than the paper clip method??
My 90 seems to have a engine lite off then on again problem while experiencing a flat spot on mid throttle ......any thoughts,
thanks for any help..
Onboard Diagnostics. Jumper A and G. Turn key to RUN. Watch speedometer.
Gentlemen, I purchased a OBD1 to OBD2 connecting adapter so I could use my current scanner which I know works yet when I plugged it in to my 90 to get codes on the screen the scanner would not light up? I then confirm that my scanner would light up when I plugged it into my 05 as I have many times in the past.
My question to everyone is why does it seem the the OBD 1 plug on my 90 does not light up my scanner with this adapter?? Realizing got the adapter could be bad is there any other way I can confirm that my OBD1 plug on my 90 is not at fault??
As always I appreciate any input or advice!!
Not sure what you are using, since you never stated, but OBD1 port does not have power like the OBD2 port does. You need an external power source for the scanner.
My scanner does obd1 and two and as ChumpVette says you need external power for your 90. My scanner has a cigarette lighter plug connector for cars that don't have 12 volt in the obd.
Thank you gentlemen!!
I understand that the OBD 1 plug does not provide power to light up my OBD2 scanner with a conversion cable from the OBD1 on my 90 Corvette to my OBD2 scanner?? Sorry to ask the same question twice but at this point am I to understand that the scanner needs power since the OBD1 plug on my 90 does not provide power? Again sorry to repeat but would like to confirm where power should be supplied assuming my conversion cable from OBD1 to OBD2 scanner is okay.
I have an actron OBD2 scan tool that works fine with my 2005 but if it needs 12 volt power to read the codes from my OBD1 90 Corvette what is the safe way to supply power to the needed source??
Again thanks to all for the responses and I apologize for the duplication of questions but rather be sure then create a problem as we all have experienced over the years.......

OBD1 port does not contain a power wire like OBD2 port. The tech tools at the time that were being used, either used a cable going to the cigarette lighter or provided a cable that connected directly to the battery of the vehicle.
I doubt the Actron has any provision in the side of the case to supply 12V power source to the unit. So you will probably need to split the case open and solder a connection point in. Or you figure out the ALDL port on the OBD1 connector and supply power through there. Or just buy an appropriate tool.

I have an Actron and it does have a port for external power and did come with cigarette lighter plug. Keep in mind my scanner does OBD1 and 2 so maybe that's why my scanner had one.
I wouldn't waste money on a code reader these days. I'd get a scanner that can actually read and log data. It'd be far more useful as not every malfunction will throw a code...
