I finally grew frustrated enough to just plug the yellow airbag connector back in despite worries about the potentially crushed wire. Car started up no problem after that.
This makes no sense. There is no correlation between the DERM and starter enable. The only thing I can think ofis that the "yellow air bag connector" was actually the key resistor contacts wire? Not likely, but it makes no sense that an unplugged Inflater Module would cause a no-crank. The car isn't wired that way.

In the above diagram, note that the Air Bag fuse goes to Cavity B, then a splice, then back to Cavity C and on to the ECM fuse. The ECM turn-on power does not "go through the DERM". It goes through the DERM's connector, but not the DERM itself. (The intent is probably to prevent the engine from running with the DERM or the AIR BAG fuse removed.)

The reason I didn't mention CRNK A/B is because it has nothing to do with the OP's "won't crank" problem. The CRNK A/B fuse is not associated with the starter solenoid circuit.

The CRNK A/B fuse is an input to the DERM to know that the key is in START. I have no idea why the DERM needs to 'know' that the key is in START, or what the actions are taken by the DERM in START. But the engine will crank and run with the DERM on the bench if cavity B and C are jumpered at the car-side connector.

Look at Chart A and you'll see yellow wire DERM to SER(Start Enable Relay) and Ignition Switch.
I'm not sure which "Chart A" you are referring to. Chart A in Section 9-J doesn't show or mention the SER. The Start Enable Relay is controlled by the CCM, (Not the DERM). The wire color is blk/yel.

The SIR system is not associated with the starter circuit. Other than a fuse-protected "tap" on Cir 5 after the Ignition Switch that goes to the feed for fuse CRNK A/B, which then goes to the DERM. (Page 8A-30-0 in my 1990 8A Supplement.) The diagram on this page shows that the SER is controlled by the CCM. Not the DERM.

I'm glad its running.
Cheers.
