I have seen alot of people talking about installing "hot cams" in their car. Like I have said, I am not that mechanically able yet. So, what is the deal with the cams. Do they make them for L98's? What level of experience is it for installation? What all would I need as far as parts? Seals? Gaskets? Would there be any power increase? Is it worth the money? If it is something I can do, can someone recommend a good product with part numbers if available?Would I have to get a custom chip? Anything I should know I am not asking? Sorry, I know its alot of questions but if I am gonna modify my car, I would rather do it right the first time and I really dont have anyone to ask in my area. Thanx guys!!!!!!
Hmmm...if you've never done one before, I would recommend against trying it without someone there to help you. It's not that it's particularly difficult from the mechanical standpoint, it's just that there are a lot of little things to remember and a lot of ways to mess things up.
If you have someone around that can help, I would say that you could go for it. However, to answer some of your other questions. Yes, you will likely need ECM modifications. There are enough other things in the motor that are restricting air flow that I would not recommend a cam as a first mod.
GM doesnt make one specifically for us like they do for the LT1 and LS1 engines. But any roller cam will work, the aftermarket is so big that GM doesnt need to make any. Our intake is so restrictive that a new cam with more duration with the stock intake wouldnt make much more power than the stock one.
I would recommend against doing this yourself without someone to help you, like he said above.
You must do something for that intake before worrying about a cam change. You either need to go with the modded TPI route that Vic89 and Joe90 have gone, or the Superram/Miniram route because the stock intake is just too restrictive when it comes to proper airflow at higher rpms.
Which cam you pick depends on which route you go, Accel 211 for modded TPI, Accel 219 for Superram, and at least a zz9 with MR.
Your heads are pretty good, but you might need new springs and retainers installed for a new cam. It would also be a good idea to have them ported, depending on which route you go with the intake.
You will need a custom program to make it idle smooth and make the best power.
Best thing you can do is figure out what power numbers you want, and then ask which cam and intake will get you there. It aint gonna be cheap though.
