just about to drop out my gearbox but there is the pipe running across the to of the gearbox and attached to the OD unit. What is this and how do I get it off without doing any damage? :smash:
Memory fades because it's been a while since I sold my 88, but . . .
It's either the vent (black plastic, single line) or coolant lines (metal, 2 lines). If coolant lines, they come off with flare nut wrenches. If vent, you leave them on.
Black plastic? If so it is just your breather tube. It also has a fitting that connects to the 4-speed (some years, others were a small seperate fitting). Just drop the tranny down and it'll come down with it. The only place it is actually attached to anything besides the O/D unit is on the 4-speed. It runs up along the lefthand side of the bellhousing and sort of exits under the wiper motor.
scorp, do you have the dave fulcher article on 4/3 rebuild, I'm getting ready to do mine... I have a factpry SM do you have any other pieces of information thanks, Frank

I have it printed out, but don't have the link to it. Gimme a second.....
yes, its a air tube. i broke mine in a roll over accident the trany experenced.
3 feet of copper tubing, and some water pipe connectors (total: $6 twice) with a bit of ingenuity, and the second try came back with a brand new air pipe that was a $#!@ to reinstall because it wasnt bent the right shape.
lesson. take care if that thing.
so, yes, just pull down the tranny and it will come down nice and easy.
